Hollywood star George Clooney and Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo could testify in Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's defence in his upcoming sex trial, a lawyer told AFP.

Clooney and his girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis, according to the defence, were among those who attended parties at Berlusconi's villa at Arcore which the prosecution says was the scene of orgies and strip-shows with prostitutes.

The 74-year old premier is to stand trial on April 6 for allegedly having paid pole dancer Karima El Mahroug, nicknamed "Ruby the Heart Stealer", for sex when she was 17, after one of his parties.

"We have proposed George Clooney as a witness," the lawyer said. "Ruby says both Clooney and Canalis were at a party at Arcore."

Clooney issued a statement expressing puzzlement.

Anglo-Irish energy firm Tullow Oil said Wednesday that it has agreed to sell part of its Uganda assets to France's Total and China's CNOOC for a total of $1.8 billion pounds ($2.9 billion).

The announcement should clear the way for a $10-billion refinery in the oil-rich Lake Albert region of the east African country.

"Tullow Oil plc is delighted to announce that yesterday it signed sale and purchase agreements with CNOOC and Total in respect of the sale of a one third interest to each party of the interests Tullow holds in exploration areas 1, 2 and 3A in Uganda," it said in a statement.

"The terms of the transactions include a total cash consideration payable to Tullow of US$2.9 billion."

Tullow, which is a major player in Africa, will retain a one-third stake and will also make "certain tax-related payments" to the Ugandan government.

Lawyers and doctors for John Hinckley, who tried to assassinate President Ronald Regan 30 years ago, have asked a federal judge to grant him more unsupervised visits to his mother's Virginia home.

Hinckley, 55, has been committed to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington since he shot and wounded Reagan, press secretary James Brady, a Secret Service agent and a policeman in 1981, as Reagan left a downtown hotel. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity. He said he shot Reagan to impress actress Jodie Foster.

In 2009, a judge allowed Hinckley to make a dozen unsupervised visits to his mother's home. A Tuesday court filing by his attorney says Hinckley has used up those visits and is unable to progress with therapeutic goals without more trips.

There's a new fad diet, and it comes from the land of stinky cheese and buttery pastries. The Dukan Diet hasselling millions of books and gaining millions more followers over the past decade. Now the high-protein diet is making its American debut, with books hitting stores next month. Here's the skinny:

What is the Dukan Diet?Created by a French doctor, Pierre Dukan, it's adivided into four phases: attack, cruise, consolidation, and stabilization. In the first phase, dieters consume only non-fatty, high-protein foods, oat bran, and water. Weight drops quickly, by as much as 1 to 2 pounds a day. In phase two, dieters can add vegetables to their regimen. Phase three allows for two slices of cheese, a bit of fruit and cheese, two servings of carbs, and twice-weekly "celebration" meals with dessert and wine. In the fourth and final phase, dieters eat whatever they like six days a week, but on the seventh day return to "phase one" mode. This is to be done for the rest of one's life. Exercise requirements are light: Just 20 minutes a day of walking and a pledge to always take the stairs.

Does this really work?Many French people think so. The diet has sold 3.5 million books in France, and reportedly helpedof the country's citizens lose weight over the past 10 years.

The Arts Council England said on Wednesday it would stop funding over 200 arts organizations as part of broader public sector cuts being enforced by the government in its battle to bring down a record budget deficit.

It was the day of reckoning for galleries, music academies, orchestras, theater companies and dance troupes who rely on the government for at least part of their budget, as the council (ACE) sought to pass on cuts of 15 percent.

ACE expressed its regret at having to turn down many strong applications, including 206 organizations which currently receive regular funding.

"We have taken the brave path of strategic choices, not salami slices, which has meant some painful decisions and it is with great regret that we have had to cease funding some good organisations," said ACE head Liz Forgan.

The body decided to award funds on a case-by-case basis rather than reducing budgets by 15 percent across the board, a controversial decision which created winners as well as losers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers averted a season sweep by Miami and exacted a dose of revenge against LeBron James by beating the Heat 102-90 on Tuesday.

Cleveland took a whopping 23-point lead, then lost it and had to storm back late in the game with a 12-0 run for the victory and a dose of revenge against former teammate James.

It was the second trip back to Cleveland for James since the all-star decided to become a free agent in the offseason and make the switch to Miami. The Heat won both games in Miami against the Cavs this season.

But James took the loss in his stride.

"Anytime we play anybody, we know we're going to get the best out of them," James said. "They came out and played extremely well. It was a good win for them."
